Libya remained among the Arab world’s leading natural gas producers in 2025, ranking ninth despite a year-on-year decline in production, according to data compiled by Energy Platform based on statistics from the Energy Institute.

The figures show that Libya produced 11.7 billion cubic metres of natural gas in 2025, marking a 4.9% decrease compared with 2024. Despite the decline, the country retained its place among the top 10 Arab natural gas producers.

Qatar topped the regional rankings with natural gas production of 183.5 billion cubic metres, recording annual growth of 2.4%. Saudi Arabia ranked second with 133.8 billion cubic metres, posting the strongest growth among the leading producers at 8.5%.

Algeria came third with output of 98 billion cubic metres, down 1.9% from the previous year, while the United Arab Emirates ranked fourth with production reaching 58.6 billion cubic metres, up 4.3%.

Oman produced 45.6 billion cubic metres, reflecting growth of 0.9%, while Egypt recorded the sharpest decline among the countries listed. Its production fell 14% to 40.8 billion cubic metres.

Bahrain ranked seventh with production of 16 billion cubic metres, down 3.1%, followed by Kuwait with 15.5 billion cubic metres, a modest increase of 0.4%.

Libya secured ninth place with production of 11.7 billion cubic metres, while Iraq completed the top 10 with 10.9 billion cubic metres after recording annual growth of 4.3%.

The latest figures highlight Libya’s continued position among the region’s major natural gas producers despite lower output during the past year, as Arab energy markets continue to experience varying production trends.

Natural gas remains one of Libya’s most important energy resources, supplying a significant share of the country’s electricity generation and domestic industries. Libya also exports natural gas to European markets through the Greenstream pipeline linking the country to Italy.

Libya continues to prioritise the development of its natural gas sector as part of broader plans to increase production, attract foreign investment, and modernise its energy infrastructure.
