A power outage has forced 92 operational water wells at Libya’s Sarir field to shut down, suspending the production of approximately 611,000 cubic metres of water per day.
The Great Man-Made River Project Implementation and Management Authority said electricity was cut off from the field at 8:57 am on Tuesday, bringing all operating wells at the site to a halt.
The outage was caused by the disconnection of 66-kilovolt transformers at the 220/66-kilovolt West Sarir substation, which supplies electricity to the field and its water wells.
The authority said it was coordinating with the General Electricity Company of Libya to speed up repairs and restore the power supply.
Electricity maintenance and protection teams are conducting technical inspections and taking the necessary measures to repair the fault.
The authority confirmed that the wells would be gradually restarted as soon as electricity returns, allowing water production to resume.
The disruption follows previous electricity failures that affected the Sarir and Tazerbo wellfields and other facilities connected to Libya’s Great Man-Made River system.
