The acting head of the United Nations Support Mission to Libya (UNSMIL), Stephanie Williams, held the first virtual meeting of the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum (LPDF).

She stated: “The meeting is an essential milestone. We are trying to rise to the level of historical responsibility, and the level of what the Libyan people, your people, demand.”

During the meeting, members of the LPDF were updated on recent accomplishments in the military, economic, and political tracks. They were also briefed on recommendations and proposals presented by representatives of the UNSMIL consultative meetings. These were held with women, youth groups, mayors and other members of society.

The UNSMIL head confirmed that Libyans want peace, security, and a decent life for them and their children. She also noted that they want respect and justice, unified and fair governance, in addition to national sovereignty, and a coherent social fabric.

“What matters to the Libyan people is “what?” – not “who?” What will result from the dialogue, and not who will participate in it,” Williams said. She pointed out that it is of the utmost importance to place the national interest above all personal, partisan, and regional considerations.

During the meeting, the LPDF members presented their views, and suggestions about the course of the talks. They urged transparency throughout the process and stressed the importance of keeping the Libyan people informed about their deliberations. They expressed their keenness to engage constructively, and in good faith in the LPDF. The members also stressed the firm objective of forging an inclusive political roadmap, to put Libya on the path of democracy, unity, and prosperity.

UNSMIL announced that it will convene in-person direct meetings on 9 November, in the Tunisian capital.
