UNSC Lifts Travel Ban on Gaddafi Family

On Thursday, the Justice Ministry of the Government of National Accord (GNA) welcomed the decision by the United Nation Security Council to lift a travel ban on the family of the late Libyan leader, Muammar Gaddafi.

On Tuesday, the Security Council Sanctions Committee lifted the travel ban imposed on Gaddafi’s widow Safiya Farkash Al-Barasi, his daughter Aisha Gaddafi, and son Mohamed Gaddafi.

The GNA’s Ministry of Justice clarified in its statement that these individuals have not been accused of any crimes, and that precautionary measures taken against them by the national authorities in the past were to investigate their funds.

The statement praised the efforts of Libya’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York, “which had a major role in the issuance of the decision to lift the travel ban on the Gaddafi family.”

In 2011, UNSC sanctions banned Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi’s family and associates from traveling outside Libya and ordered their foreign assets to be frozen. “As of June 24, 2011, the sanctions committee listed two individuals as subject to the travel ban and assets freeze, and one entity as subject to the assets freeze,” said Portugal’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Jose Filipe Moraes Cabral.
