UN Concerned Over Ceasefire in Libya

The United Nations announced its concern over recent reports from Libya and urged the rival parties to adhere to the ceasefire agreement and ensure the success of the ongoing political talks, UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said on Tuesday.

“We have seen the reports which are concerning over the increasing mobilization of militias affiliated to the Government of National Accord (GNA) in Tripoli and Misrata, in addition to the continuous sending of Turkish-backed Syrian mercenaries to the North African country”, Dujarric added in a statement.

“We urge everyone in Libya, the Libyan parties and those who have influence over them to ensure that this cessation of hostilities continues.” Dujarric noted, “There are political talks at many different levels which are progressing well. We want to make sure that these continue.”

Notably, Turkey remains opposed to the ceasefire agreement signed in Geneva, on 23 October. It continues to provide military supplies, mercenaries, and weapons to the GNA. Air traffic monitoring sites reported the landing of a Turkish military cargo plane at the Al-Watiya air base in western Libya. This brings the total number of Turkish military flights that have arrived in Libya since 23 October, to 25 aircraft.

Notably, Libyan parliamentarians from Tripoli and Tobruk have agreed to hold a unified meeting in Ghadames. This is the first meeting of its kind in Libya, since 2014.
