Macron Says Turkish Actions in Libya Threaten EU Security

The French President, Emmanuel Macron, said Turkey’s interventions in Libya threaten the EU’s security. He confirmed that sanctions to be imposed on Turkey may affect several Turkish officials and entities.

He accused Ankara of threatening the security of the region by supplying weapons and mercenaries to Libya. Macron stressed that there will be no tolerance for Ankara’s violations of the UN arms embargo.

The president added that Paris is open to dialogue with Turkey and refuses to allow the destabilization of European countries. He confirmed that he will make a decision on the future of their relationship with Turkey next March.

EU leaders have agreed to impose sanctions on an unspecified number of Turkish officials and entities, involved in gas drilling in Cypriot-claimed waters. The decision reached by the EU council after hours of heated debate disappointed hardliners such as France, Cyprus, and Greece who called for tougher sanctions.
