UNSMIL: Libyan Elections to be Held as Scheduled

The Acting Head of the UN Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), Stephanie Williams, held a virtual meeting with the participants of the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum (LPDF) to brief them on the results of their recent vote. This was over two proposals to find a consensus on the selection mechanism of the country’s executive authority.

Williams added that the meeting also aimed to inform the LPDF’s participants on the mission’s plans to move towards the implementation of all key objectives of the roadmap, which were agreed upon last month.

The UNSMIL head affirmed, “the clock is ticking, and we have a collective responsibility before the Libyan people to advance this process so as to fulfil a key objective of the roadmap, which is holding elections on 24 December 2021.”

Williams also voiced her intention to form an advisory committee in order to overcome the obstacles to the selection mechanism of the executive authority. She will as well announce the establishment of a legal committee for the constitutional arrangements.

“I am fully committed, and the train has left the station regarding this route, and there is no way to go back. Expectations are high at the international level, but the most important thing is that they are also high among the Libyan people, let’s not let them down, let’s be smart and forward-looking. A lot has been sacrificed so far, and I think that we need to really work together, and I count on you to do that on your own time as well, not just in these sessions so please invest together,” she noted.
