Italian Deputy Foreign Minister, Marina Sereni, said on Friday that the release of Italian fishermen in Benghazi was an important achievement.

Sereni added that Italy was in constant contact with the families of the fishermen, the Mayor of Mazara, and the owners of the ships.

“Our intelligence agency, and diplomats undertook every step possible to secure their release, within the framework of the law,” Sereni claimed.

She stressed that the Italian government’s policy on Libya has not changed, adding that the Italian Foreign Minister, Luigi Di Maio, affirmed Rome’s commitment to achieving stability in Libya.

The authorities of eastern Libya released the eighteen Italian fishermen after 107 days in custody. Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte, and FM Di Maio met with the Commander-in-Chief of the Libyan National Army (LNA), Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar.
