Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Wednesday that international efforts to reach a peace settlement in Libya should be intensified, the RIA news agency reported.

Lavrov is set to hold talks in Moscow with his Qatari counterpart, Mohammed bin Abdul Rahman Al-Thani. The two FMs will discuss a number of regional issues, especially the Libyan crisis and the Middle East peace settlement process.

“It is also planned to discuss the situation in the North African country through the coordination of specific practical steps by regional countries. This is aimed at strengthening mutual trust and creating favourable conditions for establishing dialogue and easing tensions,” the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted.

Libya descended into chaos after the NATO-backed overthrow of leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. In October the two rivals, the Government of National Accord (GNA) and the Libyan National Army (LNA) agreed a ceasefire.
