On Monday, the head of the Libyan Presidential Council Mohamed Al Mnifi engaged in discussions with the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El-Ghazouani, about Libya’s entitlement to assume senior and leadership positions within the Commission and other AU bodies.
According to the Presidential Council’s media office, Al Mnifi and El-Ghazouani met in Ghana’s capital, Accra, at the conclusion of the coordination meeting between the African Union and regional economic communities. They agreed to continue consultations aimed at revitalizing the role of the Arab Maghreb Union and other African Union institutions.
In a separate meeting with Congolese President Denis Sassou Nguesso, Chair of the AU High-Level Committee on Libya, Al Mnifi emphasized the importance of the Union’s role in ensuring comprehensive national reconciliation in Libya.
Libya’s strategic location and political landscape have long made it a significant player in African affairs. However, the country has faced substantial challenges in recent years, including political instability and conflict. Despite these challenges, Libya is striving to assert its influence and secure prominent positions within the African Union. This move aims to strengthen its role in regional politics and contribute to the stability and development of the continent.
The discussions in Accra highlight Libya’s efforts to reintegrate into the African political sphere and play a more active role in the African Union. By seeking leadership positions, Libya aims to influence decision-making processes and promote initiatives that align with its interests and those of the region.
President Al Mnifi’s meetings with African leaders underscore the importance of collaboration and continuous dialogue in addressing regional issues. The emphasis on national reconciliation in Libya aligns with the broader goals of the African Union to foster peace, security, and development across the continent.
