Libyan MP Says Libyan Presidential Council Should Be Located in Sirte

A member of the Libyan Parliament, Saeed Imgheib, said that the headquarters of the Head of the Libyan Presidential Council and the Prime Minister should move to Sirte as soon as possible. He explained that this step must be taken to implement all arrangements that were agreed upon by the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum (LPDF).

In a post he shared on his official Facebook account, he stated that “They (the President of the Council and the Prime Minister) must be present in Sirte for several considerations, including communication, consultation, and holding urgent meetings in a safe and quiet place, without threat or interference from anyone. All these matters are available in the city of Sirte.”

He continued that, “the government’s work at this stage is based on correspondence and communications with all internal and international parties. Most of the work is in the office and not in the field and needs offices ready for the start of work. Most important is that the presence of the President and the government in the city of Sirte will encourage members of Parliament to go to it and hold their sessions there.”

Earlier this month, Mohamed Al-Menfi was elected as the new Head of the Libyan Presidential Council, while Hamid Dbeibah was named Prime Minister. The transitional government will lead the country until national elections take place, scheduled on the 24th of December 2021.

The interim government must obtain the confidence of Parliament within 21 days, UNSMIL Acting Head, Stephanie Williams has said. The Presidential Council consists of Al-Menfi and three Deputies, namely Musa Al-Koni, AbdAllah Hussein Al-Lafi, and Prime Minister Dbeib.
