GNA’s Deputy Prime Minister & Italian Ambassador Discuss Risks of COVID-19

On Monday, Vice President of the Presidential Council Ahmed Maiteeq, met with the Italian Ambassador to Libya, Giuseppe Grimaldi, at the headquarters of the Presidential Council to discuss the risks of Coronavirus spreading in Libya.

Grimaldi reiterated his country’s support for the implementation of the resolutions of the Berlin conference, and necessary international coordination to stop military operations. He also stressed the governments need address the growing COVID-19 epidemic.

On March 26th, Fathi Bashagha, the Interior Minister of the Tripoli based Government of National Accord (GNA), discussed with Grimaldi, the possibility of increasing security cooperation between the two countries. The two parties also discussed ways to support the training of Libyan police cadres, in addition to security concerns between the two states.

This comes after a phone call between Head of the Presidential Council, Fayez Al-Sarraj and Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte, where PN Sarraj expressed his government’s and the Libyan people’s solidarity with that of the Italian people in their struggle against the Covid-19 epidemic. Al-Sarraj indicated his confidence in Italy’s ability to overcome the current crisis and help in preventing the outbreak from taking place in Libya.
