Italy’s Defence Minister: Ceasefire in Libya Remains Fragile

On Thursday, Italian Defense Minister; Lorenzo Guerini said that the ceasefire in Libya remains fragile. This comes despite the significant progress made in the political process and the formation of the new Government of National Unity (GNU) in UN-led talks in Geneva.

Guerini said, in a joint hearing with the defence committees of the Italian House of Representatives and Senate that the ceasefire in Libya remains at risk. This is due to the presence of foreign forces, militias, and mercenaries who would eventually lead to the failure of the ceasefire agreement.

He urged the GNU to ensure that the ceasefire is maintained ahead of elections scheduled for later this year.

Libya was plunged into chaos when a NATO-backed uprising in 2011 toppled longtime leader, Muammar Gaddafi. The country was later split between rival administrations, based in the east and west.

The GNU is headed by Prime Minister Abdel-Hamid Dbaiba, who took office last month with a mandate to improve services and prepare for elections in December.
