The Italian envoy to Libya, Pasquale Ferrara called for closer relations with Libya through the participation and support of international organizations such as the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL). This is in order to pave the way for holding free and transparent elections, scheduled for 24 December.

In press statements on Tuesday, Ferrara explained that the transitional Government of National Unity (GNU), headed by Prime Minister Abdel-Hamid Dbaiba is mainly tasked with organizing the electoral process, and setting the legal and constitutional basis for holding elections.

She added that the government is also responsible for the full implementation of the terms of the October ceasefire agreement, which include the reopening of the coastal road, and the withdrawal of all foreign fighters and mercenaries from the country.

The GNU is also seeking to reunify and build a comprehensive national reconciliation, throughout the country.
