Italian Defence Minister, Lorenzo Guerini, said that Operation IRINI should focus more on training the Libyan Coast Guard, according to the Italian news agency Nova.

The Italian Minister said that he “believes the most important European mission in monitoring the arms embargo to Libya should focus more on training the Libyan Coast Guard.”

He added that “there must be a European commitment in this direction, and as a consequence Italy should consider dealing with the large dynamics related to migration.”

It is worth noting that Operation IRINI has been extended to monitor Libya’s arms embargo until 2023.
