On Saturday, the Libyan Presidential Council Spokeswoman, Najwa Wahiba, stressed the need for real and rapid action by the legislative authority and the institutions concerned with fixing the deficiencies in the elections.

Wahiba added that the Libyan Council will help adopt a new date in a consensual manner that guarantees the procedures for simultaneous free and fair elections at the earliest possible opportunity. She noted that such a date should end the transitional phases, and ensure the handover of power to an elected Parliament and President.

The Presidential Council Spokeswoman said that the most prominent Libyan goal, that has yet to be achieved, is to hold the elections that were scheduled for the 24th of last December.

She added that the Libyan Presidential Council did not receive a finalised institution when it took power in Libya with a staff, budget and other necessities of making a political and quick executive decision. She pointed out that no independent presidential institution had been established in Libya since the country’s independence.

In her statement, Wahiba mentioned the steps taken by the Presidential Council during the past year, represented in establishing the High National Reconciliation Commission. She explained that the Presidential Council worked to unify the divided institutions in the country, the most important of which are the Central Bank and the military institution.

She confirmed that the Presidential Council communicated with the concerned parties, in addition to working to open the Coastal Road last June. She also said that the Council developed a plan for the simultaneous and gradual exit of mercenaries and foreign forces from Libya.

Wahiba said that this work required political action by the Presidential Council through the visits of the President and his two Deputies, in addition to activating a security agreement with neighboring countries.
