Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Vershinin has discussed via video conference, with the ambassadors of Germany, France and Italy, the developments linked to the Libyan crisis in light of the start of IRINI.

IRINI is a European operation in the Mediterranean aiming at implementing the arms embargo imposed by the United Nations.

According to a statement released by Russia’s Foreign Ministry, the diplomats stressed during the video conference that there is no alternative than a political solution to resolving the conflict in Libya.

Operation IRINI has a series of secondary tasks, such as the prevention of illicit oil exports from Libya, capacity building and training of the Libyan coast guard, and supporting the fight against human traffickers and their networks.
