Egypt’s Foreign Minister, Sameh Shoukry affirmed his full support for an inter-Libyan solution to the decade-long crisis.
He stressed Cairo’s “rejection of any external interference that would bypass Libyan institutions,” according to Morocco World News.
Speaking during a meeting of the Arab League Council on Wednesday, Shoukry praised the efforts undertaken by the Libyan Parliament, and the High Council of State (HCS) in order to reach a peaceful resolution.
The FM expressed his “hope to see Libyan institutions continue the dialogue, and commit to their respective pledges and mandates established under the Skhirat Agreement.”
Shoukry called on all foreign countries involved in the Libyan crisis to respect the country’s sovereignty. He confirmed the need to “disband the militias fighting in Libya, and compel all foreign forces, foreign fighters, and mercenaries to leave the country.” As well as calling on all parties to “support the 5+5 Joint Military Commission (JMC), to protect the sovereignty and stability of Libya.”
Last month, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry welcomed the Libyan Parliament’s amendment of the 13th Constitutional Declaration. It described this as “an important step for holding Presidential and Parliamentary elections.”
It affirmed Cairo’s aspiration for the Libyan Parliament and the HCS to finalise the election laws. As well as adding that the amendment “facilitates holding the elections under the supervision of a neutral executive authority, that upholds the supreme interests of Libya.”
The statement reiterated Egypt’s “full support for a Libyan-led solution,” praising the Parliament “as the only elected legislative body in Libya”
It called on all parties involved in the crisis to “abide by these irreplaceable foundations and determinants.” Egypt also stressed the need to “stop foreign interference in Libya, and ensure the withdrawal of all foreign forces, foreign fighters, and mercenaries from the country.”
