High Council of Libyan Elders Confirm the Need to Unify Political Bodies

The High Council of Libyan Elders and Dignitaries organised the “Libyan Constants Forum to End the Crisis” in the presence of representatives from 13 municipalities in Tripoli. They organised this with the aim of discussing the political division and the clinging of political bodies to power after the failure of the presidential elections on December 24th, 2021.

The forum rejected the 13th amendment approved by the political bodies. It considered it to lead to the repetition and failure of the presidential elections, thus preventing the legislative elections and maintaining these bodies in power and the continuation of division.

The attendees emphasised their adherence to national constants to end the Libyan crisis and unify political bodies in a single legislative body that represents all Libyans. They highlighted the need for conducting legislative elections and forming a competent government that does not exceed 17 ministerial portfolios, away from “regionalism, tribalism, and quotas.” The new Parliament would complete the constitutional process and adopt the permanent constitution of the country, paving the way for general elections and Libya’s exit from international supervision. The attendees called on the new Parliament to complete the necessary laws to conduct comprehensive national reconciliation in Libya and hold general elections according to the permanent constitution of the country.

In another context, the 6+6 committee responsible for drafting electoral laws will hold a meeting in Morocco next week. It will vote on controversial articles in the legislative and presidential election laws, according to a Libyan parliamentary source in the committee. The committee is trying not to issue any statements that may disrupt its work during the upcoming period.

The Moroccan government invited the 6+6 committee to hold its meetings in Morocco in the coming weeks. This will occur with the presence of a technical delegation from the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), to agree on the necessary electoral laws to organise the electoral process in the country during this year.
