On Saturday, Kuwait’s Ambassador to Libya, Ziad Al-Mashaan, reiterated his country’s unwavering support for the crucial role performed by the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL).
These remarks came during a meeting with the Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN) to Libya, Abdoulaye Bathily, at the UN mission’s headquarters in Tunisia’s capital.
During the talks, Ambassador Al-Mashaan relayed greetings from Kuwait’s Foreign Minister, Sheikh Salem Abdullah Al-Jaber Al-Sabah. He also stressed Kuwait’s baking for the pivotal role played by UNSMIL in its continuous work to arrange presidential and parliamentary elections in Libya.
Al-Mashaan took the opportunity to reassert Kuwait’s supportive stance for all efforts aimed at maintaining Libya’s territorial integrity, sovereignty and stability. He emphasised the importance of realising the Libyan people’s aspirations for peace, prosperity, and development.
The meeting also included an exploration of the latest political and security updates in Libya. Discussions touched upon international and UN efforts to support the political trajectory leading to the successful organization of presidential and parliamentary elections in Libya.
Over the years, Kuwait has been involved in various diplomatic engagements with Libya, especially since the fall of Moammar Gaddafi’s regime in 2011, which triggered a period of political instability in the country.
UNSMIL has been playing a significant role in helping to restore stability in Libya. The mission has been facilitating dialogue among different Libyan factions to reach a consensus on political arrangements, leading the country towards parliamentary and presidential elections. The political and security situation in Libya, however, remains complex and fragile.
Kuwait has consistently supported the mission and efforts of the UNSMIL. As a member of the UN and an important player in the Arab world, Kuwait is keen to see stability and progress in Libya, a nation with which it shares significant cultural and historical ties.
The Ambassador’s meeting with the Head of UNSMIL signifies Kuwait’s ongoing diplomatic involvement and its commitment to support peace and stability in Libya. This involves backing the UN’s plans to hold elections, which could be a crucial step towards improving the political and security situation in the country.
