Algerian Foreign Minister, Ahmed Attaf said that Algeria “continues to support the political process sponsored by the United Nations in Libya. This is in preparation for organising free and fair elections that meet the aspirations of the Libyan people in building a modern, unified, democratic state.”

This came during the ministerial meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement in Baku, Azerbaijan.

On Monday, Attaf called for intensifying consultations with Italy to resolve complex crises in the region, especially Libya.

During his speech at the opening of the 2nd session of the Algerian-Italian strategic dialogue in Algiers, Attaf stressed his keenness to “intensify the inter-political dialogue. This is to consolidate the strategic consensus that unites the positions of the two countries, regarding the rapid developments on both sides of the Mediterranean.”

The Algerian FM called on Italy to “exercise more dialogue, coordination, and rich and constructive consultation.” He referred to the “common challenges due to the deteriorating security situation in the Sahel region, the complexity of the crises in Libya, Mali, and Sudan. As well as the repercussions of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict.”

In March, the Italian Foreign Minister, Antonio Tajani called for “close coordination with Algeria to facilitate the national reconciliation in Libya, and support the stability of the Sahel region.”

The Italian Foreign Ministry said Tajani held a telephone call with Attaf, regarding the main regional files.

He stressed the importance of Italian-Algerian cooperation for the stability and security of the Mediterranean region. Tajani called on Attaf to “work in close coordination to support Tunisia, facilitate national reconciliation in Libya, and support the stability of the Sahel region.”

Tajani also emphasized the importance of Italy’s cooperation with Algeria at the political, economic, and security levels. He expressed his hope to “deepen the already excellent bilateral relations with Algeria.”

Tajani said that “Italy is working to make Libya a stable country. We are talking with everyone. We went to Tripoli with the Prime Minister (Giorgia Meloni), and we provided patrol boats to the Libyan Coast Guard.”
