Palestinian President, Mahmoud Abbas sent his condolences to Mohamed Al-Mnifi, the Head of Libya’s Presidential Council on Thursday. This is regarding the victims of the Mediterranean storm, Daniel, which hit eastern Libyan cities.
President Abbas emphasised the Palestinian people’s solidarity with Libya during this tragedy. He conveyed his deepest condolences and fraternal sympathy to the families of the victims who perished in the disaster, and wished a speedy recovery for the injured and affected.
Abbas also expressed confidence in Libyan security, rescue, and relief teams to overcome the aftermath of this devastating natural catastrophe.
Notably, the Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Tuesday that the number of Palestinian casualties due to the fierce cyclone battering eastern Libya has risen to nine, with several others reported missing.
The political advisor to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Ahmed Al-Deek relayed information from the Consulate in Benghazi about the tragic demise of a Palestinian family in Derna.
According to consulate sources, the family of Mahmoud Al-Tawab, including his wife and children, consisting of nine members, perished in the Derna.
Furthermore, the ministry stated that it is closely monitoring the situation of 62 Palestinians, stranded by floodwaters in a village near Derna. The Consulate is actively coordinating with the Libyan Red Crescent to ensure their safe relocation to secure areas.
Ambassador Al-Deek underlined the severity of the conditions in the affected region of eastern Libya, describing them as “exceedingly challenging.”
The cyclone’s impact on eastern Libya has drawn international attention, with numerous foreign nationals among the victims. The Palestinian community, like many others in the region, finds itself grappling with the aftermath of this natural disaster.
