Foreign Ministers of Russia and Egypt Discuss Libya

According to a statement by the Egyptian Foreign Ministry on Sunday, Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry discussed the latest developments in Libya with his Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov.

During the talks, Lavrov said that a military solution to the crisis was impossible. He stressed the necessity of reaching an immediate ceasefire and beginning political
dialogue between the warring parties.

The statement added that the two Ministers
discussed intensifying political consultations and cooperation to serve their joint interests.

The two also discussed updates related to the deadlocked negotiations on the disputed Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).

The phone call came one day after Egyptian President Abdel-Fatah El-Sisi hinted at the
possibility of a direct intervention by the Egyptian army to restore peace in Libya.

Egypt, along with the UAE and Russia, back the Libyan National Army, which has been fighting forces loyal to the UN-recognised Government of National Accord, which is backed by Turkey.

Earlier this month, El-Sisi announced a peace initiative dubbed the Cairo Declaration to
end the civil war in Libya by reaching a ceasefire and conducting new presidential elections.
