Libya’s General Authority for Hajj and Umrah announced on Thursday the launch of the first flights transporting Libyan pilgrims to Saudi Arabia for the 2026 Hajj season.
According to the authority, pilgrims are being transported through Mitiga International Airport and Benina International Airport, with two flights departing from each airport during the first phase of operations.
Officials previously confirmed that the opening day would include four flights carrying approximately 170 pilgrims each. Additional departures are scheduled from airports in Misrata, Sebha, Al Abraq and Tobruk as preparations continue across the country.
The authority stated that Buraq Air had been contracted to transport around 7,800 Libyan pilgrims this year. Flights will arrive at King Abdulaziz International Airport, while return journeys will depart from Medina following the completion of pilgrimage rituals.
Libyan officials said extensive coordination has taken place with the Ministry of Health to establish a specialised medical team accompanying the Libyan Hajj mission. The delegation includes doctors and nurses from different regions of Libya who will provide healthcare services to pilgrims throughout their stay in Mecca and Medina.
Medical staff will also accompany pilgrims during key Hajj rituals in Arafat and Mina, ensuring emergency and preventive healthcare support during the pilgrimage season.
In addition, the National Oil Corporation has been named the official sponsor of Libya’s Hajj mission for 2026. The corporation will provide logistical support, including travel bags, ihram garments, women’s prayer clothing and additional travel supplies.
The arrangements come as Libyan authorities seek to improve services for pilgrims and streamline travel operations following years of logistical challenges linked to political and economic instability.
