On Saturday, the Libyan Public Prosecutor’s Office announced the dismantling of a criminal gang specialised in drug trafficking in the city of Al Bayda, with 75 kilograms of hashish seized in their possession.

According to a statement released on the Public Prosecutor’s Office Facebook page, the judicial police officer at the Central Investigation Office and the Desert Patrols in Al Bayda tracked down the drug trafficking activities of the criminal gang.

The judicial procedures led to the arrest of two suspects caught red-handed with 75 kilograms of hashish intended for sale. Their statements regarding the incident were recorded during the investigation.

The authorities have transferred the suspects to the Primary Prosecutor’s Office in Al Bayda, which has taken over the investigation of the case and ordered their pre-trial detention.

This announcement follows a statement made by the Public Prosecutor’s Office last Tuesday, revealing the dismantling of another gang involved in hashish trafficking in Al Bayda.

On January 3rd, the Attorney General, Counselor Al-Siddiq Al-Sour, stated that the Public Prosecutor’s Office has a comprehensive understanding of drug trafficking networks, including their routes, individuals, and groups involved. He highlighted that thirty incidents of drug smuggling into Libya were recorded in the year 2023, pointing to a significant challenge facing the country in its fight against narcotics.

This series of successful operations underscores the Libyan government’s ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking and its commitment to upholding law and order within its territories.

Days ago, the Libyan Attorney General’s Office announced the seizure of over 8 million Pregabalin pills in a shipping container that arrived at the Port of Benghazi, on a cargo ship from India. The incident came to light following information provided by the judicial control officer assigned to the Customs Center, at Benghazi’s port.

Upon receiving the tip-off, investigators conducted a thorough inspection of the container in search of any illegal substances. This inspection led to the discovery of a substantial quantity of Pregabalin pills.

This seizure represents a significant effort by Libyan authorities to combat drug trafficking, and illegal substance abuse. The interception highlights the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement agencies in curbing the flow of illegal drugs into the country.
