Libyan Customs Authority held an expanded meeting with representatives from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime at its headquarters, aimed at enhancing cooperation and strengthening oversight systems at Libya’s border crossings.

The meeting was chaired by Major General Mousa Ali, Director-General of the Libyan Customs Authority, and focused on improving monitoring mechanisms for imports and cargo containers arriving from abroad, as well as reinforcing inspection procedures across customs points.

Discussions covered several key areas intended to boost the efficiency of tracking goods and containers, while enhancing regulatory frameworks to combat smuggling and other illicit activities.

During the meeting, Mohamed Baraka, Regional Coordinator for North Africa of the Passenger and Cargo Control Programme (PCCP), praised the efforts of Libyan customs officials in monitoring cargo movements and highlighted the noticeable progress in the performance of container control units across Libyan ports.

For his part, Major General Ali commended the support provided by the UN office, particularly in training and logistical assistance, noting that such cooperation directly contributes to strengthening the capabilities of customs personnel.

On the sidelines of the meeting, Baraka presented a specialised device used for container inspection, in support of Libya’s ongoing efforts to enhance technical and operational capacity within its customs control system.

The meeting was attended by senior Libyan customs officials, including the head of the Anti-Smuggling and Narcotics Department, the Director of the International Cooperation Office, the head of Libya’s Container Control Unit, and the official spokesperson of the authority.

International participants also included representatives from the Passenger and Cargo Control Programme, as well as a coordinator from the Export Control and Border Security (EXBS) programme.
