Coastal Road Closed Following Armed Clashes in Libyan Capital

On Saturday, a security source confirmed that armed clashes erupted between the General Security Agency and the Mobile Force in the vicinity of Al-Ghiran Bridge in Tripoli, Libya. The confrontation reportedly began due to gunfire by members of the Mobile Force at a patrol unit of the General Security on Al-Ghiran Island, leading to significant tensions in the area.

As a result of the ongoing hostilities, the coastal road in Janzour, starting from Al-Ghiran Island, has been shut down. The closures have caused considerable disruption in the western neighborhoods of the Libyan capital, where the clashes have been particularly intense.

The violence flared up in the early hours of Friday, with witnesses reporting skirmishes in Janzour, Al-Sarraj, and Ghot Al-Shaal districts, marking a sharp escalation in the security situation in the city’s western outskirts. The reasons behind the sudden outbreak of fighting remain unclear, with no official statements addressing the root causes of the conflict.

According to eyewitness accounts, the clashes involve forces from the General Security Agency, led by Interior Minister Emad Al-Trabulsi, and the armed group known as “Knights of Janzour.” The situation has heightened tensions in the area, with residents expressing concern over the potential for further violence.

The closure of the coastal road and the ongoing clashes have raised alarms about the stability in Tripoli and the broader implications for Libya’s security landscape. The incident underscores the fragile security situation in Libya, where multiple armed factions continue to vie for control in the absence of a unified national government.

The international community and local authorities are closely monitoring the situation, calling for restraint and a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
