The Chairman of the Libyan Narcotics and Psychotropic Drug Control Agency, Major General Adel Abdel Aziz, acknowledged the Libyan National Army’s (LNA) support in the country’s efforts against narcotics and organized crime on Thursday. The LNA, led by Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, has provided advanced weaponry and vehicles, enhancing the agency’s operations against these illicit activities.
Abdel Aziz highlighted the agency’s collaboration with the LNA in launching a comprehensive offensive against drug trafficking and organized crime networks, building upon previous efforts against terrorism.
A notable achievement in this collaboration was the interception of a large cocaine shipment at the port of Benghazi, marking the country’s most significant cocaine seizure. Based on intelligence from Saudi Arabia’s Drug Enforcement Directorate, the operation targeted a shipment from Ecuador, initially described as containing bananas, on 29 February 2024.
The investigation led to the discovery of approximately 128 kg of cocaine concealed within the container’s flooring, with a potential yield of 640 kg when processed. This operation involved the use of sniffer dogs and an X-ray scanner, despite the shipment passing initial inspections. One customs service member has been arrested, with further investigations aimed at dismantling the smuggling network underway.
Additionally, the Libyan Attorney General’s Office reported the seizure of over 8 million Pregabalin pills in a container from India at the Port of Benghazi last month, underlining the ongoing challenges and commitment to fighting the drug trade.
The cooperation between the Narcotics and Psychotropic Drug Control Agency and the LNA reflects Libya’s comprehensive strategy to combat drug trafficking, organized crime, and illegal migration, showcasing the armed forces’ dedication to maintaining law and order and addressing the underlying causes of regional instability and insecurity.
