On Monday, the Speaker of the Libyan House of Representatives Ageela Saleh, received the Algerian Ambassador to Libya Slimane Chenine, in his office in the city of Al-Qubbah. The meeting, as reported by the media office of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, focused on the evolving situation in Libya and the bilateral relations between the two countries.

During the meeting, the Algerian Ambassador reaffirmed Algeria’s steadfast position in supporting the House of Representatives as the sole legitimate elected authority in Libya. He emphasised Algeria’s respect for the Libyan people’s right to choose their representatives, highlighting the importance of sovereignty and self-determination in the ongoing Libyan political process.

This dialogue underscores the deep-rooted relations between Libya and Algeria and their mutual interest in ensuring stability and security in the region. Algeria’s support for the House of Representatives reinforces the international recognition of the Libyan parliamentary body’s role in navigating the country towards unity and democratic governance.

This meeting is a significant step in strengthening Libyan-Algerian ties, focusing on collaboration and mutual respect, which are crucial for the stability and development of both nations and the broader North African region.

Notably, Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has declared Algeria’s ambition to set up free zones with its neighboring countries. This announcement was made during his address at the 41st meeting of the Steering Committee of Heads of State and Government of the African Union Development Agency (NEPAD), showcasing Algeria’s proactive stance towards fostering economic development and continental integration.

The proposed free zones, intended to span across borders with Libya, Tunisia, Mauritania, as well as the Sahel countries, Mali, and Niger, represent a significant step towards enhancing trade, facilitating economic cooperation, and promoting shared prosperity among these nations. President Tebboune’s initiative underscores a commitment not only to Algeria’s economic advancement but also to the broader goal of elevating the efficiency and effectiveness of economic integration processes across the African continent.

By prioritising the establishment of these free zones, Algeria aims to create a conducive environment for businesses to thrive, encourage foreign investment, and stimulate economic activity in key sectors. This initiative reflects a deep understanding of the transformative power of regional cooperation in achieving sustainable economic growth and development. President Tebboune’s vision aligns with the African Union’s objectives of increased economic integration, underscoring Algeria’s role as a pivotal player in the continent’s quest for prosperity and unity.
