The Prime Minister of the Libyan Government-designate Osama Hammad held a meeting in Sirte with top officials, including the General Director of the Libyan Development and Reconstruction Fund, Eng. Belqasim Haftar, and Hatem Al-Areibi, Head of the Reconstruction and Stability Committee. The gathering aimed to address the ongoing challenges facing Sirte, a city of crucial importance to Libya.
During the meeting, Hammad closely reviewed the progress and operations of service, security, and governmental departments, reiterating the Libyan government’s strong commitment to the development of Sirte. The city is not only the birthplace of the government but also a principal venue for the critical meetings of the 5+5 Joint Military Committee (JMC), and it is preparing to host national powers in efforts to find a Libyan-led solution and consensus.
Hammad emphasised that the ongoing projects in Sirte are not mere grants but rightful entitlements of its citizens. “These initiatives are not targeted at any specific city but span the entire Libyan territory,” Hammad said, announcing the launch of multiple service projects across the nation. He assured that all demands would be met, including the provision of care for cancer patients, and praised the Libyan National Army’s efforts in securing the city.
Following the discussions, Hammad issued a decree to establish a free zone in Sirte’s port, underlining its significant commercial potential.
The General Director of the Libyan Development and Reconstruction Fund also confirmed plans to commence the maintenance of Sirte’s airport and port, alongside the renovation and development of government buildings, hospitals, schools, public lighting networks, road paving, water network connections, sewage system rehabilitation, and sanitation services.
On Saturday, the Libyan Parliament-designated government unveiled an expansive plan to launch development projects throughout Libya following significant reconstruction efforts in the city of Derna.
The city was severely affected by Storm Daniel in September last year, which resulted in widespread destruction and significant loss of life.
During a detailed tour of the reconstruction sites in Derna, Hammad announced that these new initiatives would commence after Eid al-Fitr holiday, with the current reconstruction efforts in Derna slated to conclude by the end of the year.
The Libyan Premier emphasized the city’s unique challenges, which led to the establishment of the Derna Reconstruction and Development Fund and areas affected by the hurricane.
