Libyan Minister of Economy and Trade in the Government of National Unity (GNU), Mohamed al-Hwaij, alongside Maltese Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Affairs, and Trade, Ian Borg, inaugurated the Maltese-Libyan Forum for Trade and Export.

The event saw participation from private sector representatives, over 50 Libyan businessmen, and 100 Maltese companies specializing in food industries, construction materials, healthcare, insurance, banking, and shipping, according to the Libyan Economy Ministry.

The forum is taking place from April 24th to 26th in Malta, under the auspices of the Maltese Ministry of Commerce and the Malta Chamber of Commerce.

During the opening ceremony, al-Hwaij emphasised the importance of investment, trade, and export between the two countries to achieve economic development and foster mutual trade cooperation. He called for efforts to increase trade volume and find suitable solutions to existing business challenges.

The forum aims to provide trading and investment opportunities for both countries, enhancing economic development, creating new job opportunities and fostering bilateral cooperation in various fields. It also aims at deepening economic relations, increasing Libya’s exports to boost revenues and diversify national income sources, and opening new avenues for Maltese products to access African markets, with Libya being a significant gateway to Africa.

The Libyan delegation includes Minister of Maritime Wealth Adel Sultan, Charge d’Affaires at the Libyan Embassy in Malta, Sahel Al-Triki, Chairman of the General Authority for Investment Promotion and Privatization Affairs, and the General Authority for Exhibitions, and Deputy Director-General of the Insurance Supervisory Authority.

Last month, al-Hwaij called for the establishment of a Libyan-Maltese Business Council to facilitate procedures for companies and investors with relevant authorities, enhancing trade and investment relations between the two countries.
