On Sunday, Libya’s Prime Minister of the Parliament-designated government, Osama Hammad, announced the formation of a Comprehensive Reconciliation Committee chaired by Defense Minister Hamid Houma.
The announcement, made public through Decree No. 67 of 2024 on the government’s Facebook page, marks a pivotal step in addressing longstanding tribal conflicts in the region.
The committee comprises four other members, including Abdullah Hussein Al-Kilani Ehteeba, Abdelkader Miftah Salem, Saad Ghafeer Saad Attia, and Mohamed Idris Suleiman Said.
Their primary mandate is to facilitate the implementation of reconciliation agreements between the Tebu tribes and the residents of Murzuq.
These efforts are part of a broader initiative sponsored by Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, with the execution overseen by Hammad and Belgasem Haftar, Director General of the Libya Reconstruction Fund.
Tasked with a critical role, the committee is responsible for all executive measures necessary to uphold the agreements, including financial and social assessments, damage appraisal, and compensation estimations for both material and moral harm to victims from both sides.
They will also compile a comprehensive final report outlining their findings and recommendations, which is to be submitted to the Prime Minister within two weeks from the initiation of the decree.
Notably, Hammad visited Murzuq on April 16, accompanied by various government officials, to engage directly with local leaders and assess ongoing developmental projects.
This visit highlighted the government’s commitment to restoring and enhancing infrastructure and living conditions in the war-torn areas.
The Libyan PM praised the spirit of cooperation and reconciliation exhibited by Murzuq’s diverse community, underscoring the importance of such grassroots initiatives in forging a path toward genuine national reconciliation.
He emphasized that the progress in Murzuq could serve as a model for the rest of the country, demonstrating that Libyans are capable of overcoming their divisions and working together to heal the nation’s wounds.
