During its 80th General Assembly session held on Tuesday, the United Nations adopted a resolution co-sponsored by Libya, Bahrain, and Tajikistan, designating May 25 as “World Football Day.” The Libyan proposal received widespread acclaim and was unanimously approved by the member states, following endorsement by 170 countries.
According to a statement posted on the “Our Government” platform on Facebook, the Libyan Ambassador Taher El-Sonni emphasised the significance of this resolution during his address to the General Assembly. He highlighted its importance despite the challenging circumstances and crises currently facing the world.
The resolution marks May 25 of each year as World Football Day and calls on UN member states, United Nations organizations, international and regional organizations, football federations, the private sector, and civil society to celebrate this day.
It’s noteworthy that the Libyan mission to the United Nations, in coordination with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, spearheaded the initiative and formed a core group to present and rally the necessary international support for this proposal.
Football in Libya holds a special place in the heart of its people, serving as a unifying force in a country marked by political divisions and historical upheavals. The sport arrived in Libya in the early 20th century during the Italian occupation, and since then, it has grown deeply entrenched in Libyan culture.
The Libyan Football Federation was established in 1962, and the national team, known as the Mediterranean Knights, has had its moments of glory on the international stage, including winning the African Nations Championship in 2014.
Domestically, the Libyan Premier League is the top professional league, featuring clubs like Al-Ittihad and Al-Ahly Tripoli, which have passionate followings and fierce rivalries that light up stadiums across the nation.
Despite challenges such as infrastructure damage due to ongoing conflicts, football continues to thrive as a beloved escape and a source of national pride. The recent recognition of May 25 as World Football Day by the UN, thanks to Libya’s initiative, underscores the sport’s significance in Libyan society and its potential to promote unity and peace.
