Major General Saddam Haftar, Chief of Staff of the Libyan Ground Forces of the Libyan National Army (LNA), has made an official visit to Chad.

Representing Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, LNA’s Commander-in-Chief, he was welcomed by General Omar Deby, Director General of Strategic Reserves, and Major General Suleiman Lony, Chief of Chadian Intelligence.

During his visit, Saddam Haftar met with Chad’s President, Mohamed Idriss Deby, conveying congratulations from the Libyan military leader on Deby’s election victory.

The meeting included discussions on common interests between Libya and Chad. They explored ways to enhance cooperation and coordination in military, security, and economic sectors to benefit both nations. Saddam Haftar emphasised the importance of strengthening bilateral relations to achieve regional security and stability.

He highlighted the significance of military cooperation between Libya and Chad, noting that it is crucial for bolstering regional security. The discussions also touched on expanding this cooperation to include other areas that would serve the interests of both countries.

He reiterated Libya’s commitment to building strong strategic relations with Chad. He stressed the importance of continuous coordination to ensure the security and prosperity of both nations.

The official visit concluded with both parties reaffirming that enhanced bilateral relations will contribute to regional development and stability, with an optimistic outlook for further fruitful cooperation in the future.

Last month, Chad’s National Election Agency announced Déby’s victory in the presidential elections with 61.3% of the vote, according to preliminary results. Opposition leader Succès Masra came in second with 18.53%, while former Prime Minister Albert Pahimi Padacké secured 16.93% of the votes.

The Constitutional Council confirmed Déby’s victory after rejecting appeals from two losing candidates who sought to annul the presidential elections either partially or entirely.

Notably, Prime Minister of the Libyan Government of National Unity (GNU), Abdel-Hamid Dbaiba, participated in Déby’s inauguration ceremony as president of the country last month.
