On Sunday, the Deputy Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), Stephanie Khoury called on all Libyan factions to embrace the spirit of sacrifice and unity.
In a heartfelt message marking Eid al-Adha, the UNSMIL acting head urged the Libyan leaders to make the necessary decisions and compromises to safeguard the nation’s interests, emphasizing the importance of overcoming divisions for the greater good of Libya.
Libya has been in turmoil since the 2011 uprising that ousted Muammar Gaddafi. The country remains divided between rival administrations in the east and west, each backed by different international actors.
Despite various reconciliation efforts, political instability, economic challenges, and security concerns persist. The UN has played a crucial role in mediating peace and fostering dialogue among the factions.
The recent years have seen attempts at peace, such as the UN-brokered ceasefire in 2020 and the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum, which aimed to create a pathway to elections. However, progress has been slow, and many of the underlying issues remain unresolved.
Khoury’ appeal comes at a crucial time. She emphasized the need for Libyan leaders to prioritize national unity and stability, drawing on the themes of sacrifice and togetherness inherent in Eid al-Adha.
By invoking these values, the acting UN envoy hopes to inspire a renewed commitment to peace and cooperation among Libya’s political leaders, ultimately leading to a more stable and prosperous future for the nation.
