The Libyan Coordination of Political Parties has called for the completion of efforts to unify the military establishment and the removal of all foreign forces from Libya. This announcement was made in a statement marking the 84th anniversary of the founding of the Libyan Army on August 9, 1951.

The coordination emphasised that this occasion recalls the national values that motivated the creation of the national army, aiming for Libya’s independence and the preservation of its sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the dignity of its citizens from all walks of life.

In their statement, the coordination praised the sacrifices made by the armed forces for the sake of Libya’s independence and territorial integrity. They highlighted that the strength, professionalism, unity, and doctrine of the armed forces are the security belt ensuring the country’s independence, sovereign decisions, and territorial unity.

They stressed that the unification of the armed forces is a key guarantor of establishing a democratic civil state where human rights are protected, and citizens enjoy equal rights and the ability to elect their legislative and executive authorities through elections.

The coordination called for the completion of the military unification process and the expulsion of all foreign troops from Libyan soil. They also urged the imposition of security and stability and the protection of Libya’s land, air, and sea borders.

The anniversary statement also reflected on the nationalistic sentiments and the historical significance of the Libyan Army’s foundation, which has been a cornerstone of the country’s fight for independence and sovereignty.

The coordination’s call for unity and the expulsion of foreign forces comes amid ongoing efforts to stabilize Libya and ensure its territorial integrity and the sovereignty of its national institutions.

In essence, the Libyan Coordination of Political Parties reiterated the need for a strong, unified military to safeguard the nation’s sovereignty and promote the establishment of a stable and democratic state.

They called for international cooperation and support to help Libya achieve these goals, ensuring peace and stability for its people.

Libya has two rival armies in the east and west of the oil-rich country. The eastern-based Libyan National Army (LNA) is controlled by Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, while the western-based rival is under the Government of National Unity (GNU) and the Presidential Council.

The two rival parties signed a ceasefire agreement in October 2020.
