On Monday, Jan Vyčítal, the Head of the European Union Border Assistance Mission in Libya (EUBAM), met with Major General Reda Issa, the Head of the Libyan Coast Guard and Port Security. The meeting underscored the growing cooperation between the European Union and Libya in enhancing maritime security and border management.

During the meeting, Vyčítal expressed his appreciation for the collaborative efforts between EUBAM and the Libyan Coast Guard. He highlighted the significant role played by the Libyan Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre in safeguarding lives at sea and ensuring the security of Libyan waters.

“The ongoing cooperation between EUBAM and the Libyan Coast Guard is crucial for maintaining maritime safety and security in the region,” Vyčítal stated. “The Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre, in particular, stands as a testament to our shared commitment to protecting lives and ensuring the safe passage of vessels in Libyan waters.”

Major General Reda Issa, in turn, reaffirmed the Coast Guard’s dedication to working closely with EUBAM and other international partners to bolster Libya’s maritime capabilities. He emphasized the importance of continued support and cooperation in addressing the challenges faced by Libya’s maritime sector.

This meeting marks another step forward in the EU’s efforts to support Libya in managing its borders and ensuring the security of its coastline. The collaboration between EUBAM and the Libyan Coast Guard is expected to play a vital role in addressing issues such as human trafficking, illegal migration, and maritime safety in the Mediterranean region.

The European Union Border Assistance Mission in Libya has been actively working with Libyan authorities to enhance border management, security, and law enforcement since its establishment. The mission continues to focus on strengthening Libya’s capacity to manage its borders and maintain stability in the region.
