Libya is taking a significant step toward revitalizing its transportation network by strengthening rail cooperation with Algeria and Tunisia. In a series of high-level meetings held in Algeria this week, Libyan officials joined their Algerian and Tunisian counterparts to discuss enhancing international rail services for passengers and freight.
These talks, held at the Algerian National Railway Transport Company’s (SNTF) advanced maintenance facility in Rouiba, signal Libya’s commitment to improving regional connectivity and supporting its economic recovery.
The Libyan delegation, including representatives from the Ministry of Transport and the national railway company, was welcomed by Mr. Aji Bououni, General Manager of the Algerian National Railway Transport Company.
The discussions, which took place from August 25 to 29, 2024, focused on ways to modernize and expand the rail networks linking the three countries. For Libya, these efforts are crucial in rebuilding its rail infrastructure, which has faced significant challenges due to years of conflict.
During their visit to the Rouiba facility, Libyan officials were particularly interested in the advanced maintenance and modernization techniques used by the Algerian railway system.
The delegation explored opportunities for collaboration, including the possibility of transferring technical expertise to help upgrade Libya’s own rail capabilities. Strengthening rail transport is a key priority for Libya as it seeks to enhance trade routes, reduce transportation costs, and improve access to markets across North Africa.
Libya’s active role in these discussions underscores its strategic focus on regional integration and economic growth. By building stronger rail links with Algeria and Tunisia, Libya aims to position itself as a central hub for trade in the region. This collaboration is seen as vital not only for improving the efficiency of transport services but also for supporting Libya’s broader goals of economic recovery and stability.
The talks concluded with all parties expressing optimism about the future of trilateral cooperation. The Libyan delegation, in particular, recognized the importance of advanced infrastructure and skilled personnel in achieving its transportation goals.
As Libya continues to rebuild, these partnerships with neighboring countries are essential for developing a modern, resilient rail system that can drive economic growth and enhance regional connectivity.
