IOM Advances Migrant Return Efforts in Libya

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has recently intensified its efforts to facilitate Voluntary Humanitarian Return (VHR) of migrants in Libya, hosting significant meetings in Tripoli to engage with multiple national embassies. This initiative aims to improve the coordination of safe and dignified returns, ensuring migrants’ needs are met comprehensively.

In a notable development, IOM welcomed the new Somali Ambassador, His Excellency Abdi Dirie, to discuss the enhancement of VHR support. This meeting underscored the critical role of diplomatic missions in addressing the complex challenges faced by migrants in Libya.

Furthermore, the organization held productive discussions with representatives from the Chad and Niger Embassies. These talks focused on the specific needs of Chadian and Nigerien communities within Libya, emphasizing the importance of safe and orderly return processes.

The meetings highlight IOM’s commitment to strengthening partnerships with key stakeholders to bolster humanitarian efforts across Libya. Through such collaborations, IOM aims to ensure that migrants can return to their home countries safely and with dignity, contributing to the broader goal of stabilizing the region and supporting its development.

Last month, Libya’s Health Ministry of the Parliament-designate government has provided healthcare support to approximately 1,400 migrants who had been detained for over two years.

The ministry has also ensured that they are accommodated at a suitable location within the Tamanhint military base.

This initiative is part of the ongoing efforts led by the Libyan government, under the directives of the General Command of the Libyan National Army.

According to a ministry statement, initial medical assessments revealed that many of the migrants were in critical health conditions due to prolonged detention.

Cases of severe dehydration, malnutrition, and skin diseases such as scabies were recorded. The Ministry of Health, in coordination with specialised medical teams, is actively providing necessary healthcare to these individuals.

The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to supporting national and humanitarian efforts aimed at improving the conditions of migrants and all those in need within Libya. It reiterated its dedication to offering comprehensive healthcare to everyone in need, in line with humanitarian values and the nation’s responsibilities towards all individuals.
