On Monday, Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, Commander of the Libyan National Army (LNA), held a meeting with Isabelle Savard, Canada’s Ambassador to Libya, and her accompanying delegation at the LNA headquarters in Benghazi.

The discussions covered the latest developments in Libya and emphasized the importance of strengthening cooperation across multiple sectors.

During the meeting, Ambassador Savard reiterated Canada’s commitment to supporting international and UN-led efforts to push forward Libya’s political process, particularly in organizing presidential and parliamentary elections. She affirmed Canada’s readiness to contribute to Libya’s stability and economic recovery.

Field Marshal Haftar welcomed Canada’s active role in helping Libya overcome its challenges and stressed the need to enhance collaboration in trade, economy, and education. He highlighted the significance of international partnerships in rebuilding the nation and ensuring long-term stability.

Ambassador Savard outlined Canada’s interest in Libya’s reconstruction efforts. She noted that Canadian companies are eager to contribute to major infrastructure projects, including initiatives in oil and gas. In education, she announced plans to facilitate access for Libyan students to scholarships at Canadian universities and simplify visa processes for academic purposes.

Savard also revealed an upcoming visit by a high-level Canadian delegation to Libya’s eastern and southern regions. The delegation, comprising business leaders, representatives from the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, and university officials, aims to explore investment opportunities in reconstruction, infrastructure, and academic collaboration.

With its vast potential in natural resources and strategic geographical position, Libya offers significant opportunities for international partners. The strengthened relations between Libya and Canada signal a promising path toward stability, economic growth, and academic exchange.

As Libya continues its journey toward recovery and reconciliation, this renewed cooperation with Canada highlights a shared commitment to building a brighter future through sustainable development and mutual benefit.
