Adal Karmous, a member of Libya’s High Council of State, emphasised that addressing the public demand for elections remains their top priority.
In an interview with Al-Masar TV, Karmous underlined that achieving elections is contingent upon unifying the country’s divided government. He described the ongoing political split as a significant obstacle to organising nationwide polls.
Karmous further highlighted the necessity of consensus among Libya’s political factions, stating that collaboration is the only path towards fulfilling the aspirations of the Libyan people. He called on all parties to intensify efforts to overcome the current challenges and pave the way for a unified governance structure.
Libya has faced protracted political divisions since the 2011 uprising that ousted Muammar Gaddafi. The lack of a cohesive government has hindered the country’s ability to hold elections, prolonging instability and economic stagnation.
Observers note that public pressure for elections has increased in recent months, with citizens demanding a clear roadmap to end the transitional phase. Efforts to resolve disputes between rival administrations remain ongoing, with international stakeholders urging Libyan leaders to prioritise unity and electoral progress.
The statement by Karmous underscores the urgency of political reconciliation as Libya seeks to establish a legitimate and democratic government through free and fair elections.
