Libya has been elected for the first time to the Executive Council of the Arab Civil Aviation Organization (ACAO), marking a significant milestone for the country’s aviation sector during the organisation’s 29th General Assembly in Rabat, Morocco.

The election took place at the conclusion of the assembly, where member states selected the Executive Council for the 2026–2028 term. Libya’s appointment reflects growing confidence among Arab member states in the country’s role within the organisation and recognises its recent efforts to strengthen civil aviation governance and align with international aviation standards.

In addition to securing a seat on the Executive Council, Libya was also elected to four of the organisation’s specialised technical committees. The appointments are expected to enhance the country’s institutional and technical presence within ACAO and increase its contribution to shaping policies related to civil aviation across the Arab region.

The new roles come as Libya continues implementing reforms aimed at modernising its civil aviation sector, improving operational efficiency and enhancing aviation safety. Authorities have been working to strengthen compliance with internationally recognised regulations and standards while upgrading aviation infrastructure and regulatory frameworks.

The election is seen as an important step in supporting Libya’s efforts to restore the country’s position within regional and international aviation institutions after years of political instability.

Officials said the appointments would enable Libya to participate more actively in developing regional aviation strategies, exchanging technical expertise and supporting initiatives designed to improve air transport across the Arab world.

The outcome of the Rabat meeting also reflects broader recognition of Libya’s commitment to institutional reform and its growing engagement in specialised Arab organisations.

Libya’s first-ever membership of the ACAO Executive Council represents a notable achievement for the country’s aviation sector and reinforces its role in promoting regional cooperation, improving civil aviation standards and contributing to the development of the Arab aviation industry over the coming years.
