Libya’s western city of Al-Zawiya witnessed fresh tension and military mobilisation in several areas along the coastal road after armed clashes broke out near the Al-Mutrad intersection, according to a security source cited by Abaad.
The source said the clashes involved two armed forces, one affiliated with the West Coast Military Zone and another linked to the Judicial Police. The confrontation raised concerns over renewed instability in Al-Zawiya, a strategic city west of Tripoli and close to one of Libya’s main coastal routes.
According to the security source, the clashes have stopped after several vehicles belonging to the 103rd Infantry Battalion, commanded by Othman Al-Lahab, were set on fire. The source denied reports claiming that the coastal road had been closed, adding that no casualties had been recorded so far.
The incident comes amid ongoing security fragility in western Libya, where rival armed groups continue to control key areas and roads. Al-Zawiya has repeatedly witnessed armed tensions in recent years, often linked to competing security forces and local armed formations.
The coastal road is one of Libya’s most important transport routes, connecting cities across the country’s north-west and serving as a vital passage for civilians, trade and security movements.
Authorities have not yet issued an official statement on the latest incident, while local sources continue to monitor the situation amid fears of renewed clashes.
