Belqassim Haftar, Director-General of Libya’s Development and Reconstruction Fund, held talks with Italian aviation and air traffic control companies to discuss steps for reopening air routes between Rome and the Libyan cities of Benghazi and Misrata.

The meeting, held at the headquarters of Italy’s National Civil Aviation Authority (ENAC) in Rome, aimed to advance logistical and technical preparations for the resumption of Italian airline services to Benghazi, according to a statement issued by the fund on Wednesday.

Haftar emphasised Libya’s commitment to meeting all technical requirements and addressing observations raised in recent aviation reports to ensure Benghazi Airport is prepared to receive Italian flights. The initiative aims to enhance connectivity between Libya and Europe and facilitate renewed travel links.

The visit to Italy by Haftar follows a recent trip by Aguila Saleh, Speaker of Libya’s House of Representatives, who was invited by Italian Chamber of Deputies President Lorenzo Fontana on 28 November.

In an interview with Italy’s Agenzia Nova, Saleh highlighted the importance of Italian companies in Libya’s reconstruction efforts. While Libya is resource-rich, he said, the expertise of Italian firms remains vital. Saleh noted that 150 Italian companies are already operating in the country and encouraged further involvement, adding that Italy could play a pivotal role in rebuilding Libya.

This collaboration is part of broader efforts to strengthen Libya-Italy ties and enhance economic recovery and development in Libya.
