A Libyan Member of Parliament, Abdul-Monem Al-Arfi, has revealed that the House of Representatives has officially requested the Attorney General to launch an investigation into Abdel-Hamid Dbaiba, the Prime Minister of the outgoing Government of National Unity (GNU). Al-Arfi claims the probe aims to uncover potential connections between Dbaiba and Israeli entities, a matter considered criminal under Libyan law.

Al-Arfi stated, “We have submitted a formal request to the Attorney General to stop Dbaiba and initiate a comprehensive investigation into his alleged dealings with Israelis.” He also added that the investigation must unveil all parties involved in this matter.

The MP further highlighted that former Foreign Minister Najla Al-Mangoush, who was dismissed following controversial meetings with Israeli officials, has yet to disclose all individuals and entities implicated in what he described as “normalization efforts,” which are prohibited by Libyan legislation.

This development underscores growing concerns within Libya regarding unauthorized communication with Israeli authorities. The issue has sparked widespread debate and calls for accountability at the highest levels of government.

Libya has been in chaos since a NATO-backed uprising toppled longtime leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. The county has for years been split between rival administrations.

Libya’s economy, heavily reliant on oil, has suffered due to the ongoing conflict. The instability has led to fluctuations in oil production and prices, impacting the global oil market and Libya’s economy.

The conflict has led to a significant humanitarian crisis in Libya, with thousands of people killed, and many more displaced. Migrants and refugees using Libya as a transit point to Europe have also faced dire conditions.

The planned elections for December 2021 were delayed due to disagreements over election laws and the eligibility of certain candidates. This delay has raised concerns about the feasibility of a peaceful political transition.

Despite the ceasefire, security remains a significant concern with sporadic fighting and the presence of mercenaries and foreign fighters. The unification of the military and the removal of foreign forces are crucial challenges.
