Libya’s Petroleum Facilitates Guard (PFG), Southwest Branch, announced heightened security measures to protect Al-Wafa oilfield, urging all units to mobilise at the site.
In a statement shared on its official Facebook page, the PFG posted images showing patrols and units stationed at Al-Wafa, located in southwest Libya. The move is aimed at safeguarding the field’s perimeter.
Al-Wafa oilfield lies approximately 540 kilometres southwest of Tripoli and 160 kilometres south of Ghadames, near the Libyan-Algerian border, within concession area NC-A16.
The OFG provided no details on the reasons behind the heightened alert or potential threats to the oilfield. The National Oil Corporation (NOC) and Mellitah Oil & Gas, the operators of the field, have yet to comment on the situation.
Tensions in the region are not new. In November 2024, clashes reportedly erupted between the OFG’s Southwest Branch and Brigade 444, with both sides accusing each other of misconduct. The OFG claimed Brigade 444 forces attempted to seize control of oil facilities, an allegation the brigade denied, asserting their operations focus on anti-smuggling efforts.
Earlier incidents included the OFG’s capture of Brigade 444 personnel who had entered the administrative borders of the southwest region. The underlying tensions highlight the fragile security landscape surrounding Libya’s vital oil infrastructure.
Al-Wafa is a significant oilfield for Libya’s energy sector, making its protection critical amid ongoing regional instability.
