Libya Praises Dutch Role in Refugee Support

In a significant meeting, Asmahan Beloun, a member of the Public Freedoms and Human Rights Committee in Libya’s House of Representatives, held discussions with the Dutch Ambassador to Libya, Joost Klarenbeek, at the headquarters of the Libyan House of Representatives. The discussions focused on human rights issues and the ongoing refugee crisis in Libya.

Focus on Human Rights and Refugees

The meeting addressed key concerns, including the human rights situation in Libya and the challenges posed by the presence of Sudanese refugees. Both sides exchanged perspectives on urgent priorities and explored ways to strengthen international collaboration to address these crises.

Libya’s Role in Supporting Refugees

Beloun highlighted the proactive measures taken by Libya to support displaced populations, particularly Sudanese refugees:

Parliamentary Efforts:

She praised the Speaker of the House for facilitating procedures for refugees and welcoming them into the country.
Support Systems:
A dedicated team of advisors and specialists has been formed to provide assistance, ensuring refugee children are enrolled in Libyan schools and universities.
She also commended the efforts of the Libyan government and the armed forces in offering critical support to the refugees, emphasizing their role in easing the challenges faced by the displaced communities.

Dutch Commitment to Strengthening Relations

Ambassador Joost Klarenbeek reaffirmed the strong bilateral ties between the Netherlands and Libya. He expressed his appreciation for Libya’s efforts in addressing these humanitarian challenges and shared his positive impressions of visiting Benghazi and Al-Qubbah during his stay.

The ambassador highlighted the Netherlands’ commitment to supporting Libya in tackling human rights concerns and assisting with solutions to the refugee crisis, emphasizing the importance of international cooperation in these efforts.

The Role of International Organizations

The discussion also involved an evaluation of the contributions made by international organizations, as well as the Netherlands’ active role in addressing Libya’s pressing challenges. Both parties acknowledged the need for continued collaboration to ensure sustainable solutions for human rights protection and refugee support.
