Libya’s Foreign Ministry and members of parliament have discussed ways to strengthen coordination on cases involving Libyan citizens detained or serving prison sentences abroad, as authorities seek to improve consular support and safeguard the rights of nationals overseas.
Foreign and International Cooperation Minister Abdelhadi Al-Hwaij, from the eastern-based Libyan government, held talks with House of Representatives member Mohamed Ali Al-Waer, who represents Bani Walid, on measures aimed at improving cooperation between state institutions in addressing the issue.
According to the ministry, the discussions focused on mechanisms to protect the legal rights of Libyans detained outside the country and ensure they receive the necessary diplomatic and consular assistance.
The meeting also reviewed the situation of Libyan citizens living abroad, as well as issues related to internally displaced people. The two officials exchanged views on the latest political developments in Libya and ongoing national efforts to promote stability and support dialogue.
Al-Hwaij stressed the importance of continued cooperation between the Foreign Ministry and the House of Representatives to strengthen institutional coordination and improve Libya’s diplomatic performance.
For his part, Al-Waer praised the ministry’s efforts to follow up on cases involving Libyan citizens overseas and to reinforce Libya’s presence in regional and international forums.
The meeting reflects ongoing efforts by Libyan institutions to improve coordination on consular affairs while supporting citizens facing legal or humanitarian challenges outside the country.
