Tripoli’s Eye Hospital has successfully conducted 12,887 surgical procedures in 2024, including 7,393 major operations and 1,000 corneal transplants across various Libyan cities.
Dr Rania Al-Khouja, Director of Tripoli Eye Hospital and Head of the National Authority for Corneal Transplantation, provided these figures during a meeting with Prime Minister Abdulhamid Dbaiba on Thursday.
During the discussion, Al-Khouja highlighted key achievements under the local treatment initiative, which aims to enhance domestic healthcare services and reduce reliance on foreign medical facilities. She also reviewed the progress of medical convoys, corneal transplant surgeries, and eye cancer treatments.
A major highlight was the advancement of the eye oncology department, the first of its kind in Libya, where specialists recently performed radioactive plaque therapy for the first time. This marks a significant step in treating ocular tumours without the need for patients to seek treatment abroad.
Al-Khouja further emphasised the importance of training Libyan medical professionals to ensure sustainable development in ophthalmology and eye surgery. She outlined plans for continuous skill enhancement and specialised training programmes to elevate healthcare standards across the country.
The meeting reinforced the government’s commitment to supporting local medical advancements, with Prime Minister Dbaiba expressing his administration’s dedication to expanding healthcare services and improving accessibility for all Libyans.
