Libya’s Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs, Adel Jumaa, has arrived in Italy for medical treatment after surviving an assassination attempt, Libyan sources told Agenzia Nova.
Jumaa was shot on 12 February while travelling on a road in Tripoli after leaving Palm City. Armed assailants fired 14 bullets at his vehicle, wounding him in both legs. He was immediately transferred to the intensive care unit at Al-Hadba Hospital in Tripoli, where his condition was described as stable.
The Government of National Unity (GNU) condemned the attack, stating that it would not tolerate threats to Libya’s security and stability. The Presidential Council called for a thorough investigation to identify and prosecute those responsible.
The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) also strongly denounced the assassination attempt. In an official statement, UNSMIL wished Minister Jumaa a full and speedy recovery while urging authorities to conduct a swift, transparent investigation. The mission stressed that there is no justification for violence against public officials or civilians, warning that such incidents undermine stability in Tripoli and across Libya.
Political analysts see the attack as a reflection of the fragile security situation in Libya, where rival factions continue to struggle for power. Despite ongoing international efforts to restore stability, the presence of armed groups remains a major challenge to governance and law enforcement.
Jumaa’s transfer to Italy for treatment underscores concerns about Libya’s healthcare system, which struggles to provide adequate medical care for critical cases. The incident also raises questions about the GNU’s ability to ensure the safety of its officials amid persistent security threats.
